Keyboard Warriors (Student Choice)
April 20, 2022
A recent movement in the political sphere is the idea of "keyboard warriors." These are people on both sides of the political spectrum who are vocal about their views, but only behind the cover of their screen and online profile. Many of the things they say online they would not dare say in person. This is more obvious in many of the parents of my friends that I sadly have friended on Facebook. They are constantly posting about the latest thing that Donald Trump or Joe Biden did wrong as if their lives depended on it. This is interesting to me because of how written culture has impacted this phenomenon. The reason that people feel comfortable doing this is because they don't have to face the person they are arguing with in real life. Often when they have similar conversations in real life, they are less adamant about their position and are more able to understand their opponents views. I think this is because the written word allows people to speak anonymously, or at least semi anonymously. Like in my last post, I suspect that we would be much better off if we use less of the new technology that allows us to hide behind the written word, and instead communicate orally.
