Texting is Bad (Student Choice)
April 20, 2022
Texting, I believe, is one of the worst inventions in the history of the human race. Obviously, texting is a product of a written culture because it uses written language to communicate. In the past, people used a type of written communication to speak to each other by way of letters. Letters, while still not as good as talking in person, were much better because they took a great amount of thought and planning. Since letters took several days to deliver, the writer would have to carefully plan what they were going to say and write in a concise, but eloquent manner to get their point across. Texting, on the other hand, has removed this delay and created a lack of care and planning in our communications. This creates issues with conflicts over poorly though out responses and misunderstandings due to brevity of messages. In an article we read earlier in the semester, we discussed the idea that language, by nature, becomes more efficient as time goes on. This is most obvious in texting as we have created short phrases that mean something bigger. I propose that we move away from texting and simply call each other to avoid misunderstandings and to be more intentional about the things we say.
